The story revolves around 11 year old Jessica, who is without a mother because her mother died when she was three years old. Her father is a workaholic with little time for his daughter. Just before the Christmas holiday season, she gets a wish from a department store employee. Jessica is granted her wish to have a mom until midnight on Christmas Eve. Olivia Newton-John stars as a shop mannequin named Amy, who becomes Jessica's mother ONLY for the Christmas season. Amy lives in the guest house, and soon gets a job at the department store where she had been a mannequin. There are missing clothing items in the store, and the manager sees that Amy is wearing what he thinks are the missing clothes. The manager keeps a close eye on Amy. Jessica doesn't have a tree yet, so Amy and Jessica go to the department store and have the mannequin sitting in the show car drive them to get a tree. The tree is a surprise for Jessica's father, and they soon decorate it. But one of the Christmas candles causes the tree to catch on fire, and damages the living room. The fire destroys many pictures of Jessica's mother, which upsets Jessica and her father. Amy is still happy go lucky. After coming home from the shopping center after school, Jessica discovers that Amy invited her crush over. Jessica is too nervous to talk to him and is even more upset when she learns that Amy read her diary. They soon patch things things up after Jessica gets scared, thinking Amy turned back into a mannequin. Jessica is in a play at school, and the Santa Claus prop never arrives. Amy and Jessica sneak into the backroom of the department store and get the old St. Nick mannequin, who, like all the other mannequins, comes alive at night. But while walking home, Nick gets hit by a car. Lawn decoration elves are brought to life by Amy and help him back to life. Nick is the Santa for the play! Amy is suspected of theft, after the manager finds Amy's bracelet in the show car, but she is released. Christmas Eve comes and Amy, Jessica, and Jessica's father exchange gifts. They invite Amy to go on a New Year's vacation with them. Amy declines, and after Jessica goes to bed, Jessica's father asks Amy to please come with them. They kiss!!! Amy prepares to leave. Jessica runs to the guest house, begging Amy to stay. Amy leaves. Jessica tells her father to go after Amy with her. They find Amy already a mannequin in the department store, but the store employee who granted Jessica's wish (played by Doris Roberts) lets Amy stay human. They walk out of the store, together.
At the end, a picture is shown of Amy, Jessica, and her father as a family.
