List of Three's Company episodes |
A Man About the House is the first episode of the popular 1970s–80s American sitcom Three's Company. Its name is taken from the British farce Man About the House, on which Three's Company was based.
[edit] Plot
The show begins with Janet Wood (Joyce Dewitt) and Chrissy Snow (Suzanne Somers) waking up and talking about the going away party for their ex-roommate Eleanor , due to her pregnancy, and marriage. Chrissy decides to take a bath, and goes to the bathroom to start the water. When she pulls back the curtain she finds Jack Tripper (John Ritter) asleep in the tub. She calls Janet into the room, he wakes up, and they introduce themselves. Jack explained he crashed the party, and had some bad punch that knocked him out. They offer him some women's clothes to change into (since Chrissy had turned the water on), and sit down to eat breakfast. The meal is not quite edible, so Jack prepares Eggs Benedict and tells them he is going to a cooking school.
Helen Roper (Audra Lindley) comes up to tell them that their party disturbed Stanley Roper (Norman Fell) and sees jack, and informs them he is not a woman. She goes down to tell Mr. Roper about him, but when Mr. Roper goes up to check a woman looking to roommate with Janet and Chrissy is mistaken for the man. Stanley concludes (after groping her), he is, in fact, a she, and then goes down to tell Mrs. Roper this news.
Meanwhile Janet and Chrissy and Jack think that it would be a good idea for him to move in with them, since he can cook, could protect them, and needed a place to stay. When the Ropers come back up to see if the person is a man or woman they are informed of the new living situation, but Mr. Roper will not hear of it. Jack goes to the kitchen to put on his newly dried pants with Chrissy. She convinces him that he should tell Mr, Roper what he really thinks, but befor he gets the chance Mr. Roper tells him "It's OK" and that he can live there.
Doubfounded as to what led to this change of heart Jack askes Janet what she told him. She then informs him that she told Mr. Roper that Jack was gay.
