Ten Years of Tomb Raider: A GameTap Retrospective, a nine-part documentary produced by online video game service GameTap, presents a partial history of Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider franchise, from the creation of the original game for the PC, PlayStation and Sega Saturn, to her status as a feminist icon and the making of Tomb Raider: Anniversary.

Whereas Ten Years of Tomb Raider's web release occurred episode-by-episode over the course of several weeks, the broadcast premiere (GamePlay HD) featured the entire documentary at once (42-minute running time). The documentary was also included on a bonus DVD with the Tomb Raider: Anniversary Collector's Edition released in Europe.[1]

The documentary was narrated by Keeley Hawes, TV/film star and the current voice of Lara in the franchise.

[edit] The Episodes

  • Episode 1: Anniversary
Take a look behind the scenes at the making of Tomb Raider: Anniversary. See how Tomb Raider creator Toby Gard and the team at Crystal Dynamics approached the challenges of updating one of the industry’s most famous titles, the original Tomb Raider.
  • Episode 2: Not Just a Video Game
Lara Croft became an icon the day the original Tomb Raider game hit store shelves, but she certainly didn’t start that way. Meet the character that was originally envisioned to star in the game (hint: his name wasn’t Lara) and find out which gaming platform actually rejected early versions of the game. This episode chronicles the genesis of the character and the path Tomb Raider took to make it onto store shelves.
  • Episode 3: Buried Alive
The ongoing success of the Tomb Raider franchise meant that the development team had to work harder and harder each year to deliver a new game that would surpass its predecessors. Did the constant pressure ultimately drive the team to kill off Lara Croft in Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation?
  • Episode 4: Reanimation
Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness was a rare misstep in the franchise and as a result, Eidos moved game development to a new studio and brought back Tomb Raider creator Toby Gard to help return Lara Croft to her former glory in Tomb Raider: Legend. Find out how and why it happened.
  • Episode 5: Pop Goes Tomb Raider
Lara Croft has become more than a video game character, this episode chronicles her appearances in print, merchandise and film. In between her gaming adventures, Lara Croft has found time to appear on hundreds of magazine covers, thousands of products, and even a feature film or two. Take an inside look at some of the best and worst licensing ideas that have been pitched to Eidos over the years.
  • Episode 6: Pixelated and Debated
Since Lara Croft first came on the scene, she’s been demonized by some as an unrealistic adolescent fantasy and heralded by others as the first feminist icon in the game industry’s world of damsels in distress. Hear arguments from both sides and make up your own mind about the true nature of the world’s most famous video game vixen.
  • Episode 7: Lara Lovers
A look at the fans. Since she burst on to the scene, Lara Croft has inspired gamers to do everything from dress like her to honeymoon like her. See the ways some of the world’s biggest Lara fans show off their Tomb Raider passions.
  • Episode 8: A Tale of 5 Laras
Over the years, Eidos has chosen a very select group of young women to truly be Lara Croft. For the first time ever, the Lara models were brought together for one amazing photo shoot. Hear their stories about life as Lara Croft and find out what each of them is doing now.
  • Episode 9: Being Lara Croft
In 2006, Eidos started its search for the latest real-life Lara Croft. The search involved more than 1000 models, but ended once they discovered Karima Adebibe. Get to know Karima as she makes an appearance as Lara at the world’s largest video game convention.

[edit] Controversy

The choice of Katie Fleming to represent the Tomb Raider fan fiction community in Episode 7 has caused a certain amount of controversy.[2][3][4][5] A number of members of the Tomb Raider community felt that Fleming's inclusion was a blatant slight of more accomplished writers who are active members in the community.

Tomb Raider Forums,[6] Turner Broadcasting System, and Eidos all played an enormous role in publicizing the documentary.
