Love Songs: A Compilation... Old and New is an album by Phil Collins, released in 2004, only a few months after the release of his three-disc greatest hits album The Platinum Collection. Love Songs... is mostly a compilation album, though as Allmusic noted in its review, it contains "several new songs, rarities, and live recordings...alternate versions...and a rehearsal take"[2], none of which is typically included in a compilation. It includes all of his hit romantic pop ballads.

[edit] Changes to original versions

A quick word about the apparent tampering with songs on the Love Songs CD... "I've Forgotten Everything" HAS been sped up by a couple of BPM's ( beats per minute ) because I felt after all this time it was just a tad too slow. On "This Must Be Love", the fade was slightly quicker because I felt it was too slow in retrospect. "One More Night" is a stereo fold down of a recent 5.1 remix, but it's pretty much identical to the original. "It's In Your Eyes" was sped up a couple of BPM's for reasons similar to "Forgotten". There was no remixing, all the other songs are as they appeared on the original albums.

Having borrowed the wife's copy of Testify, and listened to "The Least You Can Do" then compared it to the Love Songs version....there has been a massive cock up !!! What is on the Love Songs CD is the original version recorded in 2000 in LA for a previous incarnation of Love Songs. At that time I recorded "Can't Stop Loving You" and "Tears Of A Clown" as well as "Least.....". It was the first time outside Tarzan that I'd worked with Rob Cavallo, and we were seeing whether we liked working together on something more personal. This was the notorious week where, the day I did the vocals for the above, I lost my hearing in one ear, a situation which, as you know, exists today. Anyway the song was mixed at the end of that period, along with the other 2, to be put on the Love Songs CD, then, we thought, soon to be released. However the album got put back and the mixes stored. When we came to do Testify, the songs were brought out of storage and put against what we had for Testify and I made the decision to remix all of them, and replace Daryl's drum machine with some real sounds, edit the pipes, other bits and pieces, and edit the track. This was then used as the Master for Testify. As was the new mix of "Can't Stop...." How the original version from 2000 got used for Love Songs 2004, is anybodies guess !!! I asked for the Testify version, and what with being on the road, I only checked things that I considered could be "Accident Black Spots"....never again will I do THAT !!! Rest assured I will have those responsible shot, and gory photos posted on the site as a warning to others.

THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT....now this SHOULD be the version from Montreux in 1998, but you've seen my track record is not 100% with this stuff so....!!!! Also Daryl just emailed me 'cos his Production credit was left off....so more people to shoot I guess, though inevitably the buck stops here.

LOVE SONGS VERSIONS.....someone sounded upset that a few songs had changed on this CD from their original state. I've dealt with this before, and don't really want to waste time again with it, however I changed things as I had the opportunity to fix a few things that had grown to bug me about certain songs. The only one even I was surprised about was "Somewhere" which I had intended to be the original longer version, but I found out too late. Too busy with rehearsals to notice.....as I said on an earlier post, those concerned have been shot and quietly buried in a field near Dorset !!!
