[edit] Overview
"A Cheery Wave from Stranded Youngsters" is the last of three piano instrumentals spread throughout Young Team, the other two songs being "Radar Maker" and "With Portfolio". "A Cheery Wave from Stranded Youngsters" differs from "Radar Maker" and "With Portfolio" (which are both lone piano instrumentals and in major keys) as the song has backing by bass guitar and drums, and is in E minor. The song was featured on UK music magazine Select's 1998 compilation CD, Hot!.
[edit] Musical composition
The song begins with the voice of Stuart Braithwaite, counting to eight, then six, and then saying, "An' on ye go!" at (0:07), at which point the piano, bass and drums enter, playing a simple melody based on the chord of E minor. This is repeated until (0:22), when an alternate melody based around the chord of D major is played. The E minor melody returns at (0:30), followed by the D major melody at (0:45). This pattern is repeated from (0:53) until (1:31), when a new alternate melody based around the chord of C major is introduced and repeated, until (1:46), when the E minor melody is repeated, until (2:02), when the bass guitar and drums cease playing, leaving the piano to play the D minor melody, ending on an E note at (2:11), which fades out and segues into "Mogwai Fear Satan".
[edit] Third Eye Foundation remix
English musician Matt Elliot, under the pseudonym The Third Eye Foundation, remixed the song, entitling it "The Third Eye Foundation Tet Offensive Remix". It was released on the 1998 remix album, Kicking a Dead Pig, as well as being included on Belgian music magazine Gonzo Circus's 1998 compilation album, Mind The Gap Volume 21.
