[edit] History
On May 2, 2007, this was officially announced on the 30 Seconds to Mars official website, but not before checking the preference of the "Echelon" and "Mars Army". The band could not decide between "A Beautiful Lie" and "The Fantasy"; both songs contain a strong message which the band wished to deliver.[1]
It is currently unknown when the single will get an international release. Despite being unreleased, it did manage to chart at #37 on the U.S. Modern Rock charts in late 2007. This was due to the song receiving substantial radio airplay.
Though initially released during the summer, the release date of the song had been pushed back to early 2008, possibly due to the long delay of the music video.
[edit] Music video
According to EMI Japan, the video for "A Beautiful Lie" was going to be shot in both Alaska and the North Pole. Jared Leto then moved the video to Greenland and the band has started shooting since August 29, 2007. Jared has said that the video will be environmentally safe and for every download of the video, it will go to an environmental charity. Jared Leto has said on an over-the-phone interview with 99X in Atlanta that the video will be like a short film and a documentary.[2]
On 28 January it was aired through Myspace and is soon to be aired on MTV. The video is showing the importance of global warming. The video was directed by Angakok Panipaq (an alias for Jared Leto). It features hidden messages and a support website abeautifullie.org.
The music video has recently been shown through Rock Sound Magazines website and MySpaceTV. The Rock Sound article can be found online. [3]
The video is a montage of images of the Greenland environment interwoven with scenes of the band playing on the edge of an iceberg, and has the slight feel of a documentary. Only the three remaining members of the band feature in the video, touring bassist Tim Kelleher does not make an appearance. The video contains two hidden messages about Global Warming. The first one is a message that reads "We are all guilty; No matter what make a difference; Turn off your tv go outside and breathe" set in front of a number of images including a multi colored sphere, most likely representing the earth. Also, the video ends with a message to the viewers: "Turn this off right now and go outside and breathe. Love Thirty Seconds To Mars." The message is written upside-down; in other words, they are vertically flipped, not typed out backwards.[4]
