[edit] History

The route was altered in 1995 on the completion of the Black Country Spine Road. It was swallowed up into the A41 at Great Bridge and re-emerged a mile or so north at Wednesbury before continuing the remainder of the route unchanged. The "old" section of the A461 became part of the B4517 and the A4037, while a section of it became unclassified.

[edit] Dudley Bypass

In 1999 the route suffered another alteration, this time around Dudley. It was diverted along the new bypass. The old section of A461 became A4101 and A459
