Talk:A413 road
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Might I suggest ( and this is a general comment which would apply to hundreds of entries - I just happened to look at this 'A413' page ) that the word 'accident' should perhaps not used in the context of road crashes?
'Accident' certainly trips off the tongue more easily than 'crash' and we're very used to using it. But the latter is more accurate; almost 100% of incidents on our roads are not accidents at all (I can get sources for that if need be). Even Wikipedia's own 'Accident' and 'Crash' (''Car Accident'') pages make this comment so it's not just my personal view of word usage.
Nor is such usage merely pandering to political correctness or word play - because using "crash" instead of "accident" is not "calculated to provide a minimim of offense" (Wikipedia entry). If anything, the word invokes more sense of shame as there is no "get out" as there is with "accident" - which implies bad luck rather than personal blame.
