Description

A Douglas A-4B Skyhawk (BuNo 142134) of attack squadron VA-22 Det. R Fighting Redcocks in 1963. Det. M was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge (CVS-33) as part of Anti-Submarine Carrier Air Group 53 (CVSG-53) on a deployment to the western Pacific from 04 Jun to 03 Dec 1963. Normally a CVSG had a detachment of three A-4s assigned for self-defence. Note the launching rails for AIM-9B Sidewinder air-to-air missiles on the underwing pylons.
