The 98th Air Base is located at Kraljevo-Lađevci and Niš airports, Serbia. The purpose of an Air Base is to provide fire support to LF units, aerial transport, aerial reconnaissance as well as combat and logistics support to adjunct air force units

The 98th Air Base is successor of 98th fighter-bomber aviation regiment of ex Yugoslav and Serbia and Montenegro airforce. It is located at ex 256th air base (Kraljevo-Lađevci Air Base) and 161th air base (Niš Airport) and it's created from ex 98th fighter-bomber aviation regiment, 119th helicopter regiment, and one unit of 353th reconnaissance squadron. The 241th fighter-bomber aviation squadron is the only part of ex-98 fighter-bomber regiment, because 252th fighter-bomber aviation squadron is now part of 204th Air Base. The units of 119th helicopter regiment is now 119th Combined-Arms Helicopter Squadron located at Niš Airport, and 714th Anti-Armored Helicopter Squadron is located at Lađevci. There is also 2. Reconnaissance Aviation Section, ex part of 353th Reconnaissance squadron.

[edit] Tasks

The 98th Air Base units preform the following tasks:

  • to deter aerial aggression and to prevent surprise attacks;
  • aerial reconnaissance;
  • air transport;
  • participation in peace keeping operations and in international military cooperation;
  • providing support to civil authorities in case of natural disasters, catastrophes and industrial hazards, epidemics and other disasters and
  • providing support to civil authorities in countering terrorism and organized crime.

In combat the unit performs the following tasks:

  • aerial fire support;
  • air base air defense;
  • aerial reconnaissance;
  • air transport.
