Eighty-five is the twenty-fourth distinct biprime and the fourth of the form (5.q). The aliquot sum of 85 is 23 within the aliquot sequence (23,1,0) 85 being the second composite number in the 23-aliquot tree.
85 is the first number in the second cluster of three discrete biprimes with subsequent 86 and 87 being themselves discrete biprimes.
Eighty-five is an octahedral number, a centered triangular number, a centered square number, a decagonal number, and a Smith number.
85 can be expressed as a sum of two squares in two ways, 85= 92 + 22 = 72 + 62
85 is a repdigit in base 4 (1111), being the case 5×17 of a product of two consecutive Fermat primes. (The known Fermat primes are 3, 5, 17, 257, and 65,537.) Every such product is 1111 in base one less than the smaller of its two prime factors.
