- I'm sorry, but we can put whatever we want on Wikipedia. Because its servers are located in the United States of America, all actions are governed by US law. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution states that
“ | Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. | ” |
And, if I may add to what J.D. said, the Magician's Code (which you keep referencing) isn't a legally binding document. Due to the fact that few, if any of us here are magicians, this code of conduct has little affect on our actions. Thanks, Non-dropframe (talk) 15:46, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Removing of Magic secrets
Hi! I saw that you have been removing the secret of Out Of This World from the article. I saw your comment on the talk page, and you state that you are the son of Paul Curry. If that is really the case, then WOW! I have had a lot of fun with that effect, it really is good fun.
First up, let me say that I sympathise with you - I am a magician as well and I do not like seeing secrets revealed in this manner. Secondly, the way you went about removing it was a bit over the top, spouting legal threats. Wikipedia does have a policy about such matters, you can read it at Wikipedia - no legal threats. Action like that is likely to get you blocked.
As you are new here, you might not be aware of the Wikipedia project on magic. It so happens that there has been guidelines drawn up as to what secrets can or cannot be posted on WP. The full text can be seen at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Magic#Magic_Methods_and_Exposure. To summarise - if the method includes a source, then the effect can stay - this is because Wikipedia is not considered as the source of the exposure. If no source is given, then the effect can be deleted. It is best to include the reason why in the summary, otherwise people will think you are vandalising the effect. You should also add a note in the talk page as to why you have removed the secret, and offer them the chance to get the correct citation. If they do cite it correctly, then the method can be included (provided that in posting they are not breaking copyright rules, another reason for removing the secret).
Anyway, the method has been removed, and there isn't a lot of the article left. It occurs to me that you might know a fair amount about the effect that can go on there. Like maybe expanding the bit about the Winston Churchill anecdote?
If you have any comments, questions or concerns, please feel free to drop me a message on my talk page. StephenBuxton (talk) 13:41, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
