To Don Nicol and others, The ambien binds to the GABA (Gamma amino butyric acid)transmitters, inducing the sedative affect;more specifically GABA A which is the Neurotransmitter that Benzodiazapines and sedatives show a high affinity for. unless I misunderstood your questions. I am currently on 10mg of Ambien to aid in falling asleep. I have not felt overly tired when waking up nor have sporatically woken up at night. The only thing is at first I did feel "Foggy";which is suppose to be a common compliant. But after the time of the half life wears off (2-3 hours) I was fully functional.
