[edit] Marine Expeditionary Unit

In John Birmingham's Axis of Time universe, the 82nd Marine Expeditionary Unit is a Marine Air-Ground Task Force under the command of Colonel J Lonesome Jones. It is part of the 9th Marine Regiment. The 82nd MEU was assigned to the UN Security Council-mandated taskforce UNPROFLEET, charged with recovering the Republic of Indonesia from the grip of Mullah Ibn Abas and his Rising Jihad organisation. Along with the rest of the taskforce, the four ships of the Expeditionary Strike Group that carried the 82nd, the USS Kandahar Baghdad-class Littoral Assault Ship, USS Kennebuckport, an LPD12 Landing Assault Ship and Harper's Ferry-class Amphibious Landing Dockship USS Providence, were sucked into Professor Manning Pope's wormhole and through to an alternate universe.

[edit] Marine Expeditionary Brigade

After the retaking of Hawaii, Jones was left with little more than a reinforced company, and began a recruitment and training cycle. In addition to repopulating his 3rd Battalion,9th Marine Regiment, he was able to recruit an extra three battalions, (4th, 5th and 6th) which then was raised the 82nd to the level of Marine Expeditionary Brigade. This Brigade set out towards the close of the war, and was once again escorted by the USS Hillary Clinton.
