[edit] Welcome to Wikipedia
Welcome
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- How to edit a page
- Help pages
- Tutorial
- How to write a great article
- Manual of Style
You are welcome to continue editing articles without logging in, but you may wish to create an account. Doing so is free, requires no personal information, and provides several benefits. For one thing, if you edit without a username, your IP address is used to identify you instead.
In any case, I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your comments on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your IP address (or username if you're logged in) and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question and then place {{helpme}}
before the question on your talk page. Again, welcome! Addhoc 11:54, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Palestine
There was no such name as "Palestine" until AD 135. This is an anachronism, since Palestine did not exist in Seleucid times. The Romans changed the name from Judaea to Palestine in AD 135 because they were trying to stamp out the name of Judah. They failed. There is no reason to continue trying to stamp out the name of Judah when that is what it was known as at the time, and not Palestine. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 14:39, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
Once again, the term 'Palestine' is inappropriate when talking about Seleucid times. The region was not known officially as Palestine until 135 AD. The Romans chose this name as a term of contempt. As for today, the region is controlled by Israel, so if you want to use the modern entity, use Israel. The area can only be correctly called Palestine when speaking about the years 135 to 1948. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 15:10, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] An Automated Message from HagermanBot
Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! HagermanBot 17:53, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Outdated names in List of countries
The purpose of the current "For blank see blank" links are to refer people looking for a country under one current name to another current name. Nobody is going to be looking for "Upper Volta" or "Rhodesia" in a list of countries. That is why I removed your additions, and will continue to do so if you add them back. I'm sure there are plenty more old names that should be added to the list if your logic applied. Luckily, it doesn't. Lexicon (talk) 01:24, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
This is the discussion page for an anonymous user, identified by the user's numerical IP address. Some IP addresses change periodically, and may be shared by several users. If you are an anonymous user, you may create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other anonymous users. Registering also hides your IP address.
