The information you removed is supported by a reference. In order to remove the information, you would have to speak as to the reference, our own opinions hold no bearing on what we write in articles. You could, however, assert the following, if they seem to be the case:
- The cited reference does not support the text of the paragraph.
- The paragraph is written in a biased manner, and presents only one side of the referenced information (though in this case, it's better to add in additional sourced material.)
- The source cited is not reliable (though that's not likely in this case, the BBC is certainly a reliable source).
Your other option would be to look for other sources which perhaps make the opposite claim. So long as those sources are also reliable, you could certainly add in sourced information regarding the dispute. Please have a look at WP:ATT for the importance of sourcing.
