The 78th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

78th Regiment Illinois was organized at Quincy, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on September 1, 1862.

The regiment was discharged from service on June 7, 1865.

The regiment suffered 9 officers and 95 enlisted men who were killed in action or mortally wounded and 117enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 221 fatalities.[1]
