[edit] POV-pushing and false information

There are two important policies on Wikipedia that you need to understand. One is POV-pushing, meaning that you violate Wikipedia's policy about neutral point of view by pushing your point of view with no supporting evidence or consensus from other editors. You violated this policy in your edits to Enoch Powell‎ and Richard Dawkins. The second policy is avoiding inaccurate, inflammatory information in the biography of a living person. You violated this policy in your edit to Michael Medved. Both of these policies can result in a block from editing. Now that these facts have been explained to you, if you continue this abusive editing, you will be blocked. Ward3001 (talk) 21:05, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Regarding Medved, please thoroughly read WP:BLP. You violated policy.
Regarding Powell and Dawkins: "The idea of British nationality is extremely controversial, whereas the idea of English or Scottish or Welsh or Cornish nationality is not." One term is no less controversial than the other. The issue of using the terms "British" vs. "English" has been thoroughly debated on a variety of article and policy talk pages. There certainly is no consensus to use "English" instead of "British" when referencing someone who is from England. When you unilaterally decided that it should be one way instead of the other, without discussion, you violated WP:NPOV and WP:CON. As a general rule, if there is any likelihood that an edit might arouse contrversy, discuss on the talk page before making the edit.
Your edits may have been made in good faith, and I am willing to accept that you did not intend to violate policy. But now the policies have been explained. Before making such edits in the future, discuss on the talk page first and wait for responses. You can't go wrong if you do that. Ward3001 (talk) 21:21, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
Having reverted your second edit of Richard Dawkins I have been following your exchanges with User Ward3001. You mentioned the need for some 'anthropological' guidance. Perhaps you might find British nationality law useful as it discusses the very point you are confused about and explains why British is normally going to be the most appropriate designation. You seemed to go for controversial figures in making your point which is always a risky move on WP and assuming this was good faith editing leaves you wide open for POV citations. What's more Dawkins was born in Kenya not England and in his own CV describes himself as a British Citizen here which tends to nail it for me. Hope this helps Tmol42 (talk) 21:46, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
