Hi there,

It is good form to sign you posts on talk pages. If you sign with 4 tildes (this is a tilde: ~ ), you will have a signature. Even if you don't want to sign up with a user name, it will show your IP number. Jeffpw 21:59, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How to "sign" your posts

There are two ways to sign your posts:

1. At the end of your comments, simply type four tildes (~), like this: ~~~~.

2. If you are using the edit toolbar option (which must be enabled under Special:Preferences), click the signature icon (Image:Signature_icon.png) to add the four tildes.

Your signature will appear after you have saved the changes.

The end result is the same in both cases. Typing four tildes will result in the following:

Wikimarkup Resulting code Resulting display
~~~~
[[User:SampleUser|SampleUser]] 03:02, June 15 2008 (UTC) SampleUser 03:02, June 15 2008 (UTC)
Since typing four tildes adds the time and date to your resulting signature, this is the preferred option for signing your posts in discussions.
Also, it has already been confirmed that this is the IP to a group of related individuals who are all editing these pages, so not signing does not hide your identity, it merely shows that you have chosen to use an IP address instead of your user sign-in name:[1]
So, please sign your posts. It gives the date of the comment and lets other editors and users know without having to check the page history who has made the post. Wikipedia is open for everyone to check who posted something.
