Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions.

Currently, you are editing without a username. You can continue to do so, as you are not required to log in to Wikipedia to read and edit articles; however, logging in will result in a username being shown instead of your IP address (yours is 71.35.146.228). Logging in does not require any personal details, and there are many other benefits for logging in.

When you edit pages:

  • Please respect others' copyrights; do not copy and paste the contents from webpages directly.
  • Please use a neutral point of view when editing articles; this is possibly the most important Wikipedia policy.
  • If you are testing, please use the Sandbox to do so.
  • Do not add unreasonable contents into any articles, such as copyrighted text, advertisement messages, and text that is not related to an article's subject. Adding such content or editing articles maliciously is considered vandalism.

The Wikipedia Tutorial is a good place to start learning about Wikipedia. For now, if you are stuck, you can click the edit this page tab above, type {{helpme}} in the edit box, and then click Save Page; an experienced Wikipedian will be around shortly to answer any questions you may have. Also feel free to ask a question on my talk page. I will answer your questions as far as I can! Thank you again for contributing to Wikipedia. Will (Talk - contribs) 08:39, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Editors that don't provide an edit summary tend to look like vandals

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you. Will (Talk - contribs) 08:43, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

.... as you can see, I have no idea what I'm doing. But I cannot help but want to correct minor typos I find and a mistake here and there (although I've only really found that one mistake). Sorry to draw your suspicions .... but I really am no vandal. How does one go about leaving an edit summary? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.35.146.228 (talk) 04:32, 6 February 2007 (UTC-6).

Did you read the "Edit summary" link above? It should provide instructions. Click the [edit] link next to the title of this section (the part in large text that reads "Editors that don't provide an edit summary tend to look like vandals"). You will now see two text boxes. One holds this text. Under that, you will see a box labelled "Edit summary (Briefly describe the changes you have made):". That is where you enter the summary. Anything inside the /* */ is treated as a section link. So when you edit this section, you will see the field starts out as "/* Editors that don't provide an edit summary tend to look like vandals */ ". If you click preview, you will see how the field will be interpeted. First, change the field to read "/* Editors that don't provide an edit summary tend to look like vandals */ test". Then click preview. Not only will the system preview your changes, but it will preview your summary. Below the summary box, you should see "Preview of edit summary: (Editors that don't provide an edit summary tend to look like vandals - test)".

[edit] Please sign your talk page posts with ~~~~

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button Image:Wikisigbutton.png located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! Will (Talk - contribs) 04:58, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
