The 70th Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Butler, Illinois and mustered into Federal service in June 4, 1862 for a term of three months. It served on guard duty at Camp Butler.

The regiment was mustered out on October 23, 1862.

The regiment suffered 23 enlistedmen who died of disease, for a total of 23 fatalities.^[1]
