In response to the comment on the General not serving in Vietnam. If you read the article closely, you will note that he graduated from West Point in 1974. Therefore, he entered the military in 1970 as a first year cadet at West Point. He could not go to Vietnam as he was enrolled in West Point, and unlike civilian schools, his enrollment at West Point was part of his military service.

So, you are correct insofar as he could have served in Vietnam by virtue of his age, however, his enrollment at West Point in that same year precluded him from infantry service or otherwise in the theater.
