Thank you for your good intentions, but it is actually within wikipedia's policy to use a subjects own words. See Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. Regardless, I found a source, SF Chronicle, to source Bates being a Captain and I will add it to the article. If you have any questions about Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:welcome. - I got a third opinion and the third opinion concurred. I will ask an administrator to intervene if the page is reverted again. The edit summary "next time I'll go to an administrator" was a little meaner than I would have liked and I'm sorry about that.
