I've the reverted the USC article, as required by Wikipedia guidelines in these situations. This must be resolved on the talk page before you can change the section involved. I've added additional comments and links on that page as well in regards to this issue. As for the section involved, I propose the following compromise, which includes other claimants and the selectors of each; it also explains the prominence of the Dickinson System in the context of the 1920s and 1930s (I'll add that Michigan recognizes its 1932 team among its 11 national champions [1], apparently based on the Dickinson System - the only selector to choose only Michigan that year):

USC claims a total of 11 national championships, although not all are universally recognized. The NCAA does not conduct a playoff in Division 1-A football but informally recognizes determination of champions by major selectors. In 2004, USC began recognizing its 1939 team as national champions after consulting historical records and determining that the Dickinson System qualified as a major selector along with the AP [2] [3]. In 1939, the Dickinson System was one of only two contemporary selectors (the other, the AP poll, selected Texas A&M). The Dickinson System was the only contemporary selector in 1928. For both years, all other selections have been made retroactively at a later time.

Here are the years USC claims as having won a major share of the national championship:

  • 1928 - Dickinson System (Rissman Trophy); shared with Georgia Tech (College Football Researchers Assn., Helms Athletic Foundation, National Championship Foundation)
  • 1931 - Undisputed champions
  • 1932 - Consensus champions (CFRA, HAF, NCF); shared with Michigan (Dickinson)
  • 1939 - Dickinson System (Rockne Trophy); shared with Texas A&M (AP, CFRA, HAF, NCF)
  • 1962 - Consensus champions
  • 1967 - Consensus champions
  • 1972 - Undisputed champions
  • 1974 - UPI, Football Writers Assn., NCF-tie, National Football Foundation; shared with Oklahoma (AP, CFRA, NCF-tie)
  • 1978 - UPI, NCF-tie; shared with Alabama (AP, CFRA, FWAA, NCF-tie, NFF)
  • 2003 - AP, FWAA; shared with LSU (BCS, NFF)
  • 2004 - Undisputed champions

USC teams have also been selected as national champions in five other years (1929, 1933, 1976, 1979, 2002) by various nationally published ratings systems. These ratings systems are not generally viewed as major selectors of the national championship. USC does not claim to have won titles in any of these years.

I hope this is a suitable compromise; it neither promotes nor denigrates USC' s claims on this titles, but simply explains the rationale behind them and notes their level of support. Again, PLEASE do not change the section in the main article without resolving this in Talk first. I've pointed out Wikipedia guidelines to you a few times, but to no avail.
