[edit] Welcome
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- How to edit a page
- Help pages
- Tutorial
- How to write a great article
- Manual of Style
Here are some other hints and tips:
- I would recommend that you get a username. You don't have to log in to read or edit articles on Wikipedia, but creating an account is quick, free and non-intrusive, requires no personal information, and there are many benefits of having a username. (If you edit without a username, your IP address is used to identify you instead.)
- When using talk pages, please sign your name at the end of your messages by typing four tildes (~~~~). This will automatically produce your username (or IP address) and the date.
If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my talk page, or type {{helpme}} on this talk page and a user will help you as soon as possible. I will answer your questions as far as I can. Again, welcome!
Thank you again for contributing to Wikipedia. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian.
Re Category:Venus Swimwear models: I assume the software is preventing you from creating the category because you aren't signed in... Melchoir 04:55, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
It lets me edit without signing in. And registering for yet another web site and having yet another password to avoid forgetting seems like a hassle...everywhere you go these days there's always pressure to register, register, register. I don't see a good solution except to allow anonymity -- the usual separate-registrations-everywhere is a nightmare of random requirements, having to give out an email to someone who almost certainly will spam it since there's no legitimate mail you'd want from them, and endless passwords; and a unified, net-wide logon creates a massive privacy risk and would no doubt require you to tell your life history, favorite sexual position, and so forth to satisfy umpteen corporate marketing departments. (For a first stab in this direction, witness MS Passport. Getting a hotmail throwaway these days involves filling out more forms with personal info than taking out a $10000 car loan at the freaking bank!) --69.196.212.30 16:44, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, I think you'll be pleased with the amount of personal info a Wikipedia account requires: none, not even an email account. Just type in whatever logon you want and you're in! Yes, it's a hassle to remember your password, but what can I say, lots of folks around here seem to think it's worth it. Oh, and as for anonymity: if you're logged in you'll actually be more anonymous, since your IP will no longer be visible with your edits, linking them back to an ISP in Toronto. Why is there an argument here?
This is the discussion page for an anonymous user, identified by the user's numerical IP address. Some IP addresses change periodically, and may be shared by several users. If you are an anonymous user, you may create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other anonymous users. Registering also hides your IP address.
