I believe that the Hakka came from the part of China that is known as the 'central plains', where the Chinese civilisation began. The Chinese in those days were mainly a matriarchical tribal society. As the civilisation advanced, problems began to arise with regard to lines of inheritance. It is said that historically at the time, the rules were rather unsettled. It appears that the general rules was that inheritance was passed onto the younger brother, often taking the wife or wives of the elder. This is still practiced in some primitive matriachical societies today. Later, it became a mixture of primageniture and the older system of passing onto the younger sibling. This was unsatisfactory as it often led to disputes and tribal warfare. The Chou dynasty imposed a strictly primogeniture system on what was then their Kingdom. This, among other problems, led to a serious revolt by those who stuck to the ancient regime. The rebellion was suppressed and entire tribes associated with the rebels were moved to a newly founded principality, Yan, with its capital south west of what is Peijing today. The Chou dynasty in the meantime progressed and perfected their highly elaborate system based on the male line of descend. It was glorified by Confucius. Those tribes that remain loyal to the old system found themselves 'outlawed' as 'barbarians' and migrated where possible. That means in the history of China southwards. Today, even though they are genetically largely of the Han race, the Hakka retain their own culture where women retain a high status within their society, compared to the mainstream Han Chinese. This is just a humble opinion of one.
