[edit] Your recent edits
Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 05:08, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Charles Whitman
You recently deleted most of the references on the Charles Whitman article with the note "Immediately removed "most" and "possible" copyright violations." Simply citing sources is not a copyright violation, and thus I have undone your edit. If there is some other copyvio issue with the article which I am missing please let me know.--Bigtimepeace | talk | contribs 18:03, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- I took a quick look at this per your comment on my talk page. This video which you are interested in putting into the external links section is definitely a copyright problem. It seems to be from a fairly recent news broadcast, and thus still under copyright. Per our policy on linking to copyrighted works, "if you know that an external Web site is carrying a work in violation of the creator's copyright, do not link to that copy of the work." In this case YouTube could be carrying that work in violation of Fox 7's copyright. Now you say you Fox 7 "gave me the video without restriction" but you would probably need to explain exactly what you mean by that and/or prove it somehow. As far as I know, news organizations generally don't give their videos to individuals to use without any restriction.
- As to the Chet Huntley broadcast (which we link to from here) there might be similar problems with that. However it is possible that the copyright has expired (I did not check the copyright rules for TV broadcasts and am not familiar with them) or that there is some "fair use" rationale for using this video given its historical significance.
- I'm not an expert on these questions, but you might try going to Media copyright questions for help on this issue for starters (it might not be the exact right place to ask your question, but someone can probably direct you where to go). I know it can be frustrating to feel there is a double standard as to how someone is applying copyright policy (or any other policy), but rather than removing a bunch of sources to make a point, in the future just try to remain calm and seek out help either on the article talk page or from some portion of the help desk. I hope this information is helpful to you - as I said copyright issues are not an area of expertise for me.--Bigtimepeace | talk | contribs 18:41, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, but as I said I am not a copyright expert and I can't judge the accuracy of what you recently posted on my talk page. I'm fairly certain that information in the Fox7 video is Fox's intellectual property, not yours, even though you gave an interview to that news outlet (weeks ago I gave an interview to a major NYC newspaper and even had my photograph in said paper, but I don't think I have any claims to the copyright on that newspaper story since I did not publish it). I don't see how the section regarding copyright law you cite bolsters your case or even relates to the issue at hand. As I said you might well be right that the Chet Huntley video is a copyright violation and should thus be removed from the article. Again, please take up these issues on the article talk page and/or the Wikipedia page on media copyright questions. That is the best advice I can give you for now.--Bigtimepeace | talk | contribs 04:32, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
