ASCAP overall does a very good job in distributing its royalties. There is no perfect way. They take surveys from Radio, TV, Large Concert Venues, Symphonies and other venues. For the obscure writer thats work do not show in surveys can apply for special awards money. I worked on the management team with this organization a number of years ago and know it well. Music is copyrighted and the writer has a right to payment. You probably would not mind it if every songwriter whose works you were using stopped by and took free beers or ate a little off of each plate that came by his table. The ASCAP fees are a very small charge to pay for the benefit that you are reaping. If you have Karaoke available at your establishment you must be seeing some benefit.
