[edit] "Mara"
For what it's worth: While "mara" may not have started out meaning "gang," and therefore, you'd be technically correct about the translation of "Mara Salvatrucha," from what I can see it has come to be used in El Salvador to refer to gangs. People talk about "las maras" and the laws passed to try to control the gangs are often called "leyes anti-mara" by the Salvadorans I've known (and if I recall correctly, I've heard it on news programs originating in El Salvador as well). - I checked around, its very obscure when used as gang, I could only really find the references to it on sites in Spanish. But apparently it is used in obscure cases in Mexico and Central America, and not just el Salvarod. So technically mara can also mean gang, it seems. 68.155.82.233 (talk) 06:40, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
