[edit] Folk etymology

Regarding this change -- I'm not sure a couple of those aren't folk etymologies. A misunderstanding of the root of "poll" in "poll tax" changed the meaning of the word in the United States just like a misunderstanding of "cater" in "catercorner" gave "kitty-corner". I agree that "welsh rabbit" doesn't belong but suspect that "welsh rarebit" then does. mendel 00:18, Nov 16, 2004 (UTC)

Re the word vs the meaning, there's really no separation; a word's etymology is the word's history. Looking at it the other way around might clarify things: start with the question, "Why do Americans use poll tax to refer to voting polls?" Well, because historically they confused "poll", "head", with the place you vote. The folk etymology is that they did. You're right on Welsh rabbit not resulting from a folk etymology; "rarebit" was the uninformed "correction" there. I have no idea re Babylon so let's not touch that one. I've put the other two back. Thanks! :-) mendel 02:28, Nov 16, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Modernism

I saw you made an attempt at simplifying Modernism (Roman Catholicism) today, which was quickly reverted. I completely agree with the spirit of your edit, and i was tempted to revert back to your version, but your grammar and spelling were just too poor. If you work on that, and try again, i'd be happy to support any simplification of an ugly article. Foobaz· 06:48, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

It's such a natural subject for displays of intellectual dishonesty, that perhaps you will make an especial effort. I see you have attempted similar tactics at Syllabus of errors. Suppressing information is not considered "editing" at Wikipedia. --Wetman 06:55, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I agree with some of your recent comments in Modernism (Roman Catholicism) - but please, use the talk page rather than inserting HTML comments for such extended commentary! And please create a user name if you're going to do more extensive, potentially controversial editing than just correcting typos, adding links and so forth. --Jim Henry 18:20, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

And if you're going to use HTML comments (they do have their place), please learn to use them correctly! Your "comments" in Syllabus of Errors and Modernism (Roman Catholicism) showed up in the body of the article because you used <-- to open them instead of &lt!-- (with an exclamation point after the left angle bracket). --Jim Henry 20:26, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] David Emory

Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article David Emory, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached.
