Please do not add commercial links or links to your own private websites to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or a mere collection of external links. You are, however, encouraged to add content instead of links to the encyclopedia. If you feel the link should be added to the article, then please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. See the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thanks. Please stop adding inappropriate links to comercial websites, see: WP:EL. Paul August ☎ 01:31, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
- I reverted further edits by this user involving commercial linking. Adding spam is the only contribution she/he has done up to now. :( -- Pichote 19:17, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
Please stop. If you continue to use Wikipedia for advertising, you will be blocked from editing. Wmahan. 21:46, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
This is your last warning. The next time you insert a spam link, as you did in Mahatma Gandhi, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. .Blnguyen | rant-line 02:16, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
You have been temporarily blocked from editing Wikipedia for continuing to add spam links. If you wish to make useful contributions, you are welcome to come back after the block expires. |

[edit] My reply
In the interest of full disclosure, here's my reply to an email (with the name removed for privacy purposes):
From: "Wil Mahan" <wmahan@...> To: "XXX" <XXX@bookyards.com> Subject: Re: How to conform to Wikipedia's rules Dear Mr. XXX, The short answer is that you are not allowed to post links to your own website. Wikipedia is not a vehicle for promotion and it is not a link directory; please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/External_links . You were blocked from editing because you continued to add the links, even after being warned several times on the talk page. If you have any other questions, feel free to let me know.
And another email, after he asked why links to Project Gutenberg are included while links to his site are not:
I think you are right that Wikipedia editors generally look more favorably on Project Gutenberg links than links to most other digital libraries. To me, there are some important differences between your website and Project Gutenberg: 1. PG is an international volunteer effort, and it is the oldest and perhaps most well known digital library. Your website does not appear to be nearly as comprehensive. 2. Like Wikipedia, PG is noncommercial. In contrast, your site appears to have a commercial nature, judging from the .com address and the "Advertise with us" link at the bottom of each page. 3. Like Wikipedia, PG works are freely redistributable. In contrast, a random eBook I downloaded from your site included the text "All formats of all books published on BOOKYARDS are the sole and exclusive property of BOOKYARDS.com, and cannot therefore be reproduced in any manner without the express authorization of BOOKYARDS.com". 5. In fact, the first eBook I checked from your site was a copy of the text from PG, identical even in the formatting of the textual notes. My understanding is that is legal for you to use PG's works without attribution in this way, but I do not see why Wikipedia should link to your commercial use of PG's works rather than the original noncommercial source. Please note that I am not an authority on Wikipedia; decisions are made by consensus. If you still feel that links to your site should be included you are invited to discuss them on the relevant talk pages.

This is the discussion page for an anonymous user, identified by the user's numerical IP address. Some IP addresses change periodically, and may be shared by several users. If you are an anonymous user, you may create an account or log in to avoid future confusion with other anonymous users. Registering also hides your IP address.
