[edit] Query

One query: when you edited the Subdivisions of Scotland page, what did you mean by your Edit summary: ("Unitary Authority" is not a Scottish designation.?

Ta. --Mais oui! 14:11, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

Although Scottish "Councils" are authorities which are unitary in nature I have so far not found any legislation which allocates the term "Unitary Authority" as a proper designation for a Scottish "Council". This does not seem to have stopped various government departments using the term but legislation appears to be specific in not describing Scottish "Councils" as "Unitary Authorities, e.g.:-

[from s.91 Environment Act 1995] "local authority", in relation to England and Wales, means—

(a) any unitary authority,
(b) any district council, so far as it is not a unitary authority,
(c) the Common Council of the City of London and, as respects the
    Temples, the Sub-Treasurer of the Inner Temple and the Under-
    Treasurer of the Middle Temple respectively,

and, in relation to Scotland, means a council for an area constituted under section 2 of the [1994 c. 39.] Local Government etc. Scotland) Act 1994;

This appears to be the typical nature of the same definition in other legislation. 62.49.29.104 22:30, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

P.S. Having now Googled the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, both with and without the word "unitary" as a search term it would seem that "unitary" appears nowhere in its text, although the generally descriptive term of "unitary authority" appears in other places which are not the active parts of Acts and S.I.s. --62.49.29.104 22:50, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

Do you think that that is worth mentioning in the Subdivisions of Scotland article? I think that it is an important piece of information, considering that the term is used pretty universally elsewhere in the UK. --Mais oui! 23:19, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

I have altered the wording so that "unitary authority" becomes a mere description (while still referring to the page dealing with such authorities in general) rather than having the appearance of an official designation.--62.49.29.104 02:19, 24 April 2006 (UTC) . . .
