It is only customary to warn someone in light of new vandalism. However I see that you have stopped, which is a good thing (by the way I would recommend leaving comments for Gwernol on his talk page rather than user page next time). Anyways, to answer your question, most boxes come with certain parameters. The box you were editing did not allow the parameters you were inputting.
