- Hello, why do you think Belgrade is famous for its tall people? I have never known this and yet I know Belgrade extremely well (like a resident). Sure enough I have seen a handful of tall people walking about here and there, strolling up Knez Mihajlova or somewhere near-by, but 99% of the time, he is in the company of a dozen or so shorter friends (by short, 180cm or less). My honest opinion is that these lanky Belgraders are probably southern in origin (eg. from the Dinaric regions such as Herzegovina or Montenegro), either by birth or family descent. It stands to reason: Belgrade, being a long-time capital city, is cosmopolitan, especially where people from the former Yugoslavia are concerned, you get all sorts there. But go to Smederevo, Pozarevac, Nis, Novi Sad, Uzice, Cacak, Subotica, Leskovac, Novi Pazar etc. and sense the absence of these tall people. I'm afraid to say that those towns are the real Serbia, because Belgrade's population is about a quarter of the country (minus Kosovo), and as we said, not ALL Belgraders are tall, some are infact very short. Of course, if they were tall up there, you'd expect the same atleast in the adjacent regions (Vojvodina and northern Central Serbia). I'm sure it is the same in Zagreb; they are mostly short, and there Ivo Karlovic was born. My guess is that his family is from Dalmatia or Croatian parts of Dinaric Bosnia; his height is rare for Zagreb. Evlekis (talk) 18:19, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
