From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 61st Air Army (61 Vozdushnaya Armiya) of the Supreme High Command, is the main Military Transport Aviation unit of the Russian Air Force, with its headquarters being located in Moscow. The main aircraft it uses is the Il-76 Candid (about 220) and An-22 Cocks; or the medium transport An-12 Cubs.
The Russian Air Force has begun in 2002 to upgrade its Il-76MD transport aircraft, but this is a slow process, only two aircraft being modernized in 2005. According to the modernization programme, 12 Il-76 aircraft are due to be modernized before 2010, to Il-76MD-90 variant.
