[edit] Plot
Neelix becomes interested in Earth history, spurring research about an ancestor of Captain Janeway named Shannon O'Donnell who was alive at the turn of the 21st century.
The story then turns to Shannon, played by the same actress who portrays Janeway, Kate Mulgrew. She is part of a Millennium Gate tower project, which would be a broad step forward in space exploration. Unfortunately, it's also devastating the nearby town. Henry Janeway, a bookstore owner, does not want to give up the property the store sits upon.
Shannon and Henry become personally involved, leading to many conflicts and ultimately, a few surprises for Janeway herself, who had always admired Shannon.
The bookstore was offered a retail space in the completed Millennium Tower. Shannon O'Donnell is hired by the company that built the tower as a consultant.
At the end of the episode, at nearly midnight (the deadline for Henry Janeway to sell his bookstore), Shannon talks Henry into selling his bookstore. The two exit the bookstore to the applause of the crowd gathered outside.
Construction of the tower started in 2001 and finished in 2012.
- At the end of this episode, reference is made to the Y2K glitch, which failed to turn out a light bulb. This episode was filmed and aired in 1999, and the prediction was nearly correct, as only a few minor incidents were associated with Y2K.
