The 56th Illinois Infantry was an Union Army regiment from Illinois during the Civil War. The regiment was established in 1862 and it made up of soldiers from the counties of Massac, Pope, Hamilton, Franklin and Wayne. Immediately after the Regiment was mustered into service at Camp Mather, General Grant ordered it to Paducah, Kentucky[1].
