53rd and 6th or Chicken and Rice is a popular halal gyros stand on the corner of 53rd Street and 6th Avenue in New York City. The cart most recognized by its primary dish which is a platter of chicken and/or gyro meat with rice [1], while it also serves a gyro wrap. The cart has somewhat unusual hours as it usually opens at around 7:30pm [2][3] and does not close until 4:30am.
The menu is somewhat simple, but the two most popular orders are the plate with rice, which is $6 and the sandwich, which is $4. The plate with rice comes with your choice of chicken, lamb or both, rice, salad (lettuce), pita bread and your choice of white/hot/bbq sauce. The sandwich consists of meat, salad and sauce on pita bread.
Additionally, you can get the plate without rice, for $1 less.
There is a sister cart across the street, on the same side of 53rd street. Contrary to popular opinion, that cart is run by the same owner [4], and is open from the hours for 10 am - 4 am, with a cook switch at 7 pm. During the day, tomatoes are included with the salad and prices are $1 cheaper, with a sandwich going for $3 and a plate going for $5.
Recently the stand has become so popular, the owners have hired bouncers. [5]
The stand is famous for their white sauce. They originally catered to the late night taxi/cab driver crowds, but through the immense amount of popularity of the nightlife crowd, the lines grew to 2 hour waits. Currently the line for a plate of food is about 75 minutes on a Friday or Saturday night.
