The 51st Regiment Indiana Infantry was an infantry regiment recruited in Indiana for service in the American Civil War.

[edit] Organization and assignments
The regiment was organized at Indianapolis, Indiana, and moved to Louisville, Kentucky on December 14, 1861. After Louisville, they went to Bardstown, and remained on duty there till February, 1862. The group became prisoners of war until December 1863. They were reorganized at Indianapolis, Ind., and rejoined army at Nashville, Tennessee. They were assigned to guard the railroads between Nashville and Chattanooga, until April, 1864. They were sent to New Orleans on June 16 before they settled into Texas in July.

The 51st Indiana Infantry took part in many battles of the civil war including:
- Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee, April 6-7.
- Advance and siege of Corinth, Mississippi, April 29-May 30.
- Guarding Memphis & Charleston Railroad.
- Pursuit of Bragg to Loudon, Kentucky, October 1-22.
- Battle of Perryville October 8.
- Advance on Murfreesboro December 26-30.
- Battle of Stone's River December 30-31, 1862, and January 1-3, 1863.
- Battle of Franklin November 30, 1864.
- Battle of Nashville December 15-16, 1864.

The regiment lost 1 officer and 55 soldiers to mortal wounds, and 6 officers and 202 enlisted men by disease. Total casualty count was 264.
