[edit] Summary

Non-free / fair use media rationale for Brazilian cruzeiro
Description

This 500,000 Cruzeiro note was issued in 1993. Cruzeiros replaced the Cruzado Novo in 1990, which had in turn replaced the Cruzado in 1989. Cruzeiros in their turn were replaced in 1993 by the Cruzeiro Real. Each of these name changes were accompanied by dropping three zeros from the old notes (1000 old= 1 new). For a funny history of the Brazilian currency, take a look at [1] [2]. If it was not for the dropping of three zeros every time the Brazilian currency was re-printed, one dollar, which bought around 50 Cruzeiros in 1960, would buy 50,000,000,000,000 Cruzeiros by 1993. Of course, since the dollar only buys one-twentieth of what it bought in 1960 (it's now worth a Nickel, due to inflation), the true buying power of an old 1960's Cruzeiro is much less than one trillionth of a cent.
