4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division (United States)

The 4rd Brigade Combat Team (Long Knife Brigade) is a combined arms Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division. Its major equipment includes M1A2SEP Tanks, M2A2 & M3A2 ODS Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles, M109A6 Paladin Howitzers, and M1114 Up-armored Humvees.

The 4th Brigade is a subordinate component of the 1st Cavalry Division and wears the same shoulder sleeve insignia.

[edit] Initial Organization

The 4th Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division was first constituted on 18 October 2005 at Fort Bliss Texas. At a ceremony on Noel Field, MG Peter W. Chiarelli presented the colors to COL Stephen Twitty, the first commander of the brigade.

[edit] Operation Iraqi Freedom

In late 2006, 4th Brigade began deploying to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. The brigade would redeploy to Fort Bliss Texas in late 2007.

The Brigade was organized as follows:

  • 1st Battalion, 9th Cavalry (Recon) "Head Hunters"
  • 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry "Ghost"
  • 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry "Thunderhorse"
  • 5th Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery "Black Dragons"
  • 27th Brigade Support Battalion "Rough Riders"
  • 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion "Vigilant"

Upon return to the United States, the brigade was reflagged as 4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss. On 7 March 2008, 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division was reflagged at Fort Hood Texas when BG Vincent K. Brooks, the acting commander of the 1st Cavalry Division, passed the colors to COL Philip Battaglia, the second commander of the brigade.
