- Constituted 1944-03-11 in the Army of the United States as the 656th Field Artillery Battalion
- Activated 1944-04-20 at Camp Rucker, Alabama
- Inactivated 1945-12-01 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey
- Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 656th Field Artillery Battalion, redesignated 1946-12-24 as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 479th Field Artillery Group, and allotted to the Organized Reserves (remainder of 656th Field Artillery Battalion concurrently disbanded)
- Activated 2 January 1947-01-02 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- (Organized Reserves redesignated 1948-03-25 as the Organized Reserve Corps; redesignated 1952-07-09 as the Army Reserve)
- Reorganized and redesignated 1959-05-25 as Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 479th Artillery Group
- Location changed 1960-05-01 to Horsham, Pennsylvania; location changed 1968-01-31 to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
