The United States Army's 3rd Cavalry Division was created from the perceived need for additional cavalry units. Going into World War II, the US Army Cavalry was contained 3 Regular, 4 National Guard, and 6 Organized Reserve cavalry divisions as well as one independent cavalry brigade (the 56th from Texas).

- 6th Cavalry Regiment (converted to a non-divisional unit)
- 10th Cavalry Regiment (later reassigned to 2nd Cavalry Division)
- 12th Cavalry Regiment (later reassigned to 1st Cavalry Division)

- The 3rd Cavalry Division was located in the United States and never deployed.
