The 37 mm flare caliber is the specification for a civilian legal variant of the US military's 40 mm grenade system.
To avoid classification as "destructive devices" under BATFE rules, all ordnance fired from 37 mm flare launchers are typically non-weapon rounds. Such rounds include:
- flares
- smoke rounds
- noise effect rounds
37 mm flares can be fired from a variety of devices, including standalone launchers, and M203 style launchers mounted on M4 and M16 rifles
