36 is System of a Down's earliest work and 36th recorded song on the album. It appeared through their timeline dating back to their Untitled 1995 Demo Tape, then on Demo Tape 4/Self Titled Recording Sessions, played live in France as an untitled song, appearing on Toxicity II/Steal This Album! Recording Sessions, then finally on Steal This Album!. At forty-six seconds, this is the band's shortest song. Bassist Shavo Odadjian explained in a French interview that he was obsessed by the number 36.

[edit] 1995 Tape
The first dated appearance of the song came on a demo tape made in 1995. There was some confusion of it being the song Flake, which is said to be along the same lines of this song. It was called .36 then.
[edit] Demo Tape 4
The second appearance was on the 4th Demo Tape, or the Self Titled Recording Sessions, that was sent to record label companies. The song featured a strumming intro, compared to the later versions, and is supposed to be longer (51 seconds) compared to the 46 seconds on Steal This Album!. This version is also referred to as ".36".
[edit] Live in France
The third version of this song was played in France in 2002 before the release of Steal This Album! during their European tour with The Dillinger Escape Plan. It kept the same basic structure, and was leaked on the net as an untitled song, later named "Your Own Pace" by a group of internet users.
[edit] Toxicity II Version
There is a disoriented guitar intro. Serj screams more and the snare drum is more eminent than before. It was leaked onto the internet as, once again, "Your Own Pace".
[edit] Steal This Album! Version
The final version kept a very similar structure to its previous versions.
