What happens in the exchange-phase, if a player gets a suit he does not have? Granted this is not very likely, but also not impossible. Does he give back any (likely bad) card?

Actually it's quite likely that if a player were void in one suit that another player would try to trade cards of that suit, in which case that/those card/cards would simply be returned to their issuer instead of being exchanged.
