A .sub file is used with some videos to allow video playback programs to display subtitles on the screen as a video is played. It can also be used by some encoders to insert subtitles directly into the finished video. It is an extension primarily used by the SubViewer and SubViewer 2.0 formats.
A .sub file can also be a part of CloneCD image files.
