.my is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Malaysia. The Malaysia Network Information Centre (MYNIC) is currently the registry and registrar for the domain, in charge of registration, billing, system administration, and policies and operation of the domain. MYNIC was previously a division of MIMOS Berhad, a research and development government corporation, before it was incorporated on May 24, 2006.

[edit] Domain naming convention

Registrations of .my domains are at the third-level under second-level names. Therefore, .my domains are usually structured as exemplified below:

While MYNIC administers the .my top level domain, it only registers third level domain names. As such, MYNIC doesn't register .my domains names such as:

  • example.example2.com.my
  • example.my

Exemptions in the third restriction are the official websites of MIMOS (mimos.my) and Jaring (jaring.my) (a former subsidiary of MIMOS).

[edit] Second-level domains

  • .com.my, for commercial organisations or activities.
  • .net.my, for network-related organisations or activities.
  • .org.my, for organisations or activities that do not fall under other categories.
  • .gov.my, for Malaysian government organisations only.
  • .edu.my, for Malaysian educational organisations only.
  • .mil.my, for Malaysian military organisations only.
  • .name.my, for Malaysian individuals' personal use only.

The .name.my subdomain is specifically reserved for personal domains of individuals, and registrations in all other subdomains are restricted to companies and organisations.

[edit] Third-level domains and restrictions

While registers are free to define the names of their domain names, MYNIC restricts the use of certain names, in any language including English and Malay. Words prohibited in .my domains include:

  • Country or state names, or well-known names, such as "Malaysia", "Melaka" or "Johore", which may only be applied by the relevant State authority, or individuals who have been authorised by the relevant State authority.
  • Terms sensitive to the main religions in Malaysia, such as "Islam", "Buddha", "Hindu" or "Christianity".
  • Words that are "obscene, scandalous, indecent, offensive or contrary to Malaysian public norms."
  • "Bank" or "finance company" (or any derivative of the words), unless consent is obtained from the Minister of Finance, pursuant to Section 15 of the Banking and Financial Institutions Act 1989.
