Hi *Paul*, and welcome to Wikipedia.
Thankyou for finding the time to sign up and contribute to our little project. If you're in doubt about anything, you might want to check out some of these pages:
- Welcome, newcomers - a general introduction, and a good starting point
- The help centre and FAQs
- The Manual of Style - a guide to the community's writing conventions
It's also a good idea to sign the new user log and add a little about yourself.
When contributing to a talk page, you can sign your name by typing four tildes after your comments, like this: ~~~~. (Just so you know, some people won't pay attention to unsigned comments).
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask me at my talk page, or at the Help desk or Village Pump.
Above all, make sure you be bold when contributing, and have fun!
- Thanks for volunteering to help with the AFL scores, and thanks for all your hard work maintaing the scores website! How is it that you came across us? It seems very fortuitous! All the same, once you get the hang of Wiki-editing in general, just use the template I made and fill-in-the-blanks to add more season articles. Feel free to add more information than what we're adding now - the rough plan was to get the basics (ladder etc) in first.

[edit] Australian Football League season 1970
Looks good, the round-by-round stats are what we were aiming for. It just needs some formatting, like links for the various venues, dates; some 'wrapper' text to introduce it, and the things like overall attendance and medal winners that are in the other articles. The actual tables look great. Don't stress about the format too much though, just take your time to get used to Wikidom and everything will fall into place! Thanks. █ T █ P █ K █ 07:53, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] You
I wish to interview you, or atleast find out your life story, and some other things. I am trying to research all about humankind and all types of peoples. I have randomly chosen you, if you wish to comply to this, it can be done in secrecy through e-mail, or easily on the talk pages, which ever is easiest for you. But if you don't like this idea, then tell me on talk page. Private Butcher 01:15, 5 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Cricket win percentage
Hello Paul,
I hesitate to criticise anything you do with List of Test cricket records and List of One-day International records, but I'm just wondering why you changed the definition of win percentage. To me, counting a tie the same as a loss seems wrong. Was it just for convenience? It's surely easy to calculate it either way, isn't it?
Thanks,
Stephen Turner (Talk) 15:24, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi Paul! You have done some great work on cricket, Australian rules and rugby league. You are always welcome to join WikiProject AFL, WikiProject Cricket and WikiProject Rugby league. Help is always needed and appreciated! Thanks DaGizza Chat (c) 08:17, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Cricket updates
Your update of the List of Australian Test cricketers has edited out a number of amendments we have to names to make sure the list is pointing in the right direction (see [1]). Could you amend your update program to take account of this? Many thanks, jguk 17:21, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks. I should have noted that it's great to see you updating them. Is it your intention to regularly update all these lists, or just the Aussie ones? jguk 18:02, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Cricket biographies
It's great to see more cricket biographies being created (even if they are of Australians! :) ). Could I ask that you add references for what you're adding (eg have a references section listing the Cricinfo or CricketArchive page, or whatever books you are using) and also to place the cricketers in their own categories. Cheers, jguk 15:04, 31 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Apologies.
I've put this here, in case you don't notice it on Talk:The Goodies. I didn't mean to overwrite your edit. I started an edit session before you did, and didn't get around to writing and saving the comment until after you had. I didn't even know it'd happened until you made your second comment.--Drat (Talk) 11:57, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Cricket biographies
Hello Paul! Nice to see you templating pages about Cricketers. Could you please add their birth and death categories? I have done this for some of your recent creations but I would rather that you get in to the habit. Regards, -- (aeropagitica) 14:31, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
- Hello again! Thanks for tweaking your program to include birth and death categories, the entries are more consistent with other biographical stubs now. Best wishes, -- (aeropagitica) 10:05, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
I see you're nearly at the end of the Aussies - I do hope you'll move onto the Lists of Test cricketers of other nations, jguk 18:29, 4 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re: More sub-stubs
Hi Paul, thanks for your message. I think all cricket biographies should have at a minimum: full name, including middle names; date and place of birth; date of death if applicable; the fact the person was a cricketer; some information about their career; a References section (all Wikipedia articles should have one of these), usually including a Cricinfo link generated by the {{cricinfo}} template; categories for all the teams they played for; and {{cricketbio-stub}} if it's a short article. The infobox is nice, but I don't always bother for very short articles. I hope that's helpful! Stephen Turner (Talk) 13:51, 2 January 2006 (UTC)
Paul, When you get a chance, could you merge a couple of my biographies, AM Smith and Timothy Andrew Lloyd, into yours- they have quite alot of background info which might be useful. Thanks, rob77
[edit] WP:AFL
Hi Paul, was wondering if you are interested in joining WikiProject AFL. I noticed that you have a link to Rleague on your userpage, is that the site that you personally run? Rogerthat 03:17, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- Let me just say that is a brilliant site. I use it extensively on this site when creating player profiles - if you look at many pages on here (i'll give you some examples - Rory Hilton, Nathan Buckley, Anthony Rocca)) they all have links to the player's stats page on Rleague AFL Tables.
- Also, do you plan to add any statistics prior to the 1993 season on your site? Rogerthat 03:38, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- That's fair enough, the main reason I asked is to fill in details of players like James Hird and Peter Riccardi, who debuted in 1992 or prior. Perhaps if you could tell me the dates of their debut (date, ground, round, versus, etc) for certain articles you come across.
Also do you think it would be worthwhile to have pages such as List of AFL players to have played more than 300 games, considering your site already covers this? You can always convert your HTML tables easily by using this site. Cheers, Rogerthat 03:52, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- Can I sign my name at the bottom of Roger's "Let me just say that is a brilliant site" too? It has been helping me in my tipping comps for years. Drew (Snottygobble | Talk) 04:00, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, Drew. This season it will be 8 years old. --Paul 04:21, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
Yeah I don't see much point myself in totalling the results for every season of AFL when Rleague and allthestats have that covered. But I think we should at least include some of the key records, such as games record holders at each club perhaps? If we want to include stuff on here it should at the least combine two sources. I suggest we get all the AFL Draft details up as well, at the moment I've only got the 1998 AFL Draft (which, BTW, I found printed out a couple of weeks ago when I conducted a house cleanout). Rogerthat 04:34, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks for the stubs!
These will come in handy, as they are much better than the ones I was generating. On most of the bios I'm doing, I'm trying to add a bit more color for at least the better known cricketers and hopefully one day all... my theory being that there has to be something interesting in any man's life which merits inclusion in a bio. This, of course, is a lot of work and it's not possible to automate, and the stubs you sent me can be a good start in probably every case. Ok if I start uploading some of them to the undone Windies cricketers?
Also, might I ask how you've been generating these files? I have tried a couple of things, including Excel, but the results have been less than satisfatory. I guess in theory one could write a Perl script (or similar) off the raw data on the list of cricketers page, but I didn't want to get into all that right now... it's been a while since I've used that kind of language (I just write a bunch of C code these days) and I know I'd have to get back up to speed. --Deville 15:21, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
- Good enough, maybe one day I'll try and write some code for some of these other country's player pages, or maybe if people decide we need all the series pages. I did some VB back in the day, but it's been a while. ;-) Anyway, I think I'll make some more bios later today, and I'll just add on to some of the stubs you sent me, if that's ok. --Deville 18:11, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

The Vegan Vandal, for what it's worth. I was just saying that I think it's OK to throw the baby out with the bathwater in a case like this -- yes, s/he makes some legitimate (if usually pretty trivial) edits on cricket subjects, but the vast majority of his/her work is tedious, malicious vandalism and I revert on sight.

Hi Paul,
I was wondering if you'd be interested in signing my petition to have my User:Jebus Christ username reinstated. You mentioned in Talk:Rugby league that you thought the user name blockage was petty. I'm currently campaigning to get it back. I'd be greatfull for your support. The petition is on my talk page: User talk:Jebus Christ
Thanks,

Thanks for your support. I just discovered that the user who complained about my username has been involved in protecting the mahamad cartoons article from vandalism. I find that somewhat hypocritical. Jimididit 10:39, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Touch
Sorry Paul but your recent edits at Football are incorrect. See the long and messy discussion at Talk:Touch football (rugby league). What people in Europe usually mean when they refer to "touch rugby" is the code that Australians call Touch or touch football. There are different versions of touch rugby and the Australian-invented Touch is the most popular form worldwide; unlike Australians, Europeans generally refer to both union and league as "rugby". Grant65 | Talk 13:05, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
- I understand your frustration, but we need to use terms, and explain things in ways, that cause the least confusion for people in different countries. And the game that we call Touch is called "touch rugby" in Europe and the US. Hence the compromise title for the article: Touch football (rugby league). Grant65 | Talk 13:42, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion Proposal
I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Dulip Samaraweera, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree, discuss the issues raised at Talk:Dulip Samaraweera. If you remove the {{dated prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. [edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Bfirmannqvpr.jpg
This file may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading Image:Bfirmannqvpr.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. When you use a generic fair use tag such as {{fair use}} or {{fair use in|article name}}, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

[edit] Image:CatrionaRowntreeGetaway.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:CatrionaRowntreeGetaway.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
- On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. [edit] Fair use rationale for Image:HaleAndPaceCat.jpg
Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:HaleAndPaceCat.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "[[Special:Contributions/

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:HaleAndPaceCat.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:HaleAndPaceCat.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion.
If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 03:04, 16 April 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Kelly hi! 03:04, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
