'Adan (Arabic: عدن) is a transcontinental governorate of Yemen, including the city of Aden and the archipelago of Socotra. The ancient capital, the port city of Crater, was located here.

Adan or Aden was under the British Rule in the period 1839-1967. In 1967, Aden, and other Southern Governorates, were able to gain independence after years of struggle. Aden became the Capital of the Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen 1967-1990). In 1990, both South and North Yemen formed the present Republic of Yemen. Aden is now the commercial Capital of the Republic of Yemen. The archipelago of Socotra was part of the Governorate of Aden, but recently, the Government of Yemen attached it to the Governorate of Hadhramout.
